Help please to identify plant, it’s been growing overwinter and has no flowers

    Possibly an Echium pininana?

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    It has flower buds, it will flower this year, set seed then die.

    Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

    It will flower this year, I can see the buds in it.

    The bees will go mad for the flowers.  Watch out when it dies back, you'll need gloves to handle the leaves, they have little needles.  Don't be surprised if you get more next year, they are very good at re-seeding themsleves.  I'm guessing one of your neighbours has probably had one.  We've grown them every year, we used to have to cover them up during winter but they seem to get through without that these days (milder winters).
