Rhodo bud blast

One of my rhodo bushes which is in a container, appears to have developed bud blast throughout. It is worth cutting back severely and saving, or should I dispose of the whole plant? And if I have to destroy the plant, can I re-use the same compost in the container, or has that to be replaced as well?

It's quite likely that the problem is due to a lack of water when the buds were forming last summer, especially if it's in a container.
If your plant doesn't get enough water in the summer when the buds are forming, all you'll get is brown buds the following spring.
    Is that a possibility?

  • Hi Pete - no, that isn't the problem - I am religious about watering. It was new last year, and flowered prolifically, but then the bud blast occurred.

hmmm. Sorry I don't know then - it's not something mine have had.
    Hope someone can advise.
