I’m a little bemused, nobody seems cross at all to me? You said you weren’t sure but thought it might be an Asian hornet, lots of people have advised how to identify it to be sure, and told you its most likely not one as they are quite uncommon, but if it is one what to do about it. I’m not sure what the issue is?

As you said you weren’t sure what it was, I just wanted to reassure you our own native hornets are just as massive as the Asian hornet. A queen even bigger, but however scary they seem they are nothing to worry about.

What was the outcome of this? Did you manage to subdue the beast?

Edit to add that I just looked at the Government sightings log and it looks pretty promising that very few nests have been found since the peak in 2018. 1 nest destroyed in 2021 and 2 in 2020. Only one single hornet logged this year so far but peak sightings are always in the autumn.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I don't think we are going to hear anything else on this, such a shame because I would have liked to see it.

It was probably a European hornet, I think they're bigger than the Asian ones. Giant Asian hornets, unhelpfully called 'murder hornets', haven't turned up in Europe yet, afaik.
We usually have a couple of hornet nests in our garden most summers. They're no bother except they are attracted to lights so they end up on the patio doors at night, then get sleepy and fall off and I always worry the dogs will accidentally step on one when I let them out in the morning.
They sound scary and look terrifying, but they seem pretty peaceable animals

People see 'Asian Hornets' and 'Killer Spiders' everywhere. Common sense and rationality died out somewhere between when I was brought up and the present day

  • Hello everyone ,  last week I saw a huge wasp,  fortunately I was indoors,  it was flying around the washing line then just flew into an adjacent shrub.  It look exactly like a wasp but about 2 inches long,  huge great thing.  Not sure it was a hornet because it looked exactly like a wasp on steroids. Stay safe,  any thoughts.
    God bless VJ
