Itea Ilicifolia

This lovely shrub does not seem to be thriving? It sits in a south facing position.

It doesn't look happy. We had a very fine specimen for many years and then one year for some unknown reason it just gave up and died. Obviously something was wrong but we couldn't work out what.
They like moist soil but well drained. Is it too dry?

I think its probably a soil problem both in terms of moisture and quality. Im inclined to pot it in a richer soil with either perlite or vermiculite.

    What do you think?

Look at the link and you will see that RHS doesn't suggest South facing. Could this be the problem?
