Delphinium yellow leaves

Hi can anyone advise what is wrong with my delphinium? The leaves are yellow at the bottom and there seems to be white patches on the senses of the leaves or tips is this normal the plant is in the direct sunlight in the morning but then the Sun disappears over our house about 12 o’clock so then it’s in shade mostly for the rest of the day the soil is moist and I’ve been watering it on the morning regularly before the Sun gets too hot. I only bought it a couple of weeks ago so not sure what I’ve done to it if anything 😞

I'd guess the white patches may be a mildew of some sort - usually caused by a lack of water or irregular watering where the plant dries out then gets soaked - which is not unusual in some garden centres/retailers.
Hopefully it won't affect your plant too much and it'll grow out of it.

But it's hard to say without seeing the patient as it were - if you could post a pic we may be able to offer more accurate advice.

  • thanks for your response here is a pic…

I tend to water every morning but then didn’t for a few days as it had rained and the soil was very moist

I can't see any sign of mildew so that's good.
My guess is that it's been overwatered. Roots need air around them just as much as they need water around them.
It's important that the pot it is in is raised off the ground a little so there's nothing stopping water running out of the bottom of the pot.
All garden centres sell pot feet

  • Ok thanks this is helpful to know. The pot does currently sit on the slabs so feet might help. Do I need to let it dry naturally or shall I repot with dryer soil? I have fed it today which means I’ve put even more water in 😒 and do I take the yellow leaves off?

Thanks Ben - that makes it easier :)

Yes, get some feet for it.
I often use 3 or 4 bits of polystyrene or a few bits of wood to raise pots - only needs to be about 2cm off the slabs but will make the pot drain much easier.
I'd let it dry out naturally and not disturb it whilst it's a bit poorly and let the leaves drop naturally so that there's no wounds for infection to get in.

Don't feed it too often - a lite feed once every 2-3 weeks whilst it's growing will be more than enough. Too much feed messes-up the salts inside the plant.
To see if it needs water stick your middle finger into the compost about 4-5cm and only water if your finger is dry.

We're all happy to help you on your way - just ask :)
Good luck with your delphinium - it would rather be in the ground tbh, they're not pot plants really
