@Plantminded - We are in the South West so our nearest RHS garden is Rosemoor. Sadly they don't admit dogs apart from very rare occasions so we don't get to go there having hounds that dislike being left.
Going to take a trip to Dr Smart's garden at Marwood over the next couple of days as they have lots of trees and shrubs there. Very sensible advice to look at a mature specimen rather than a Twig in the garden centre. We are already lucky enough to have several natives around, although we have had to say goodbye to most of our Ash so I would like something more ornamental near the house. Am pleased I posted this request as you get responses about things you hadn't even considered. 👍
What about Crab apple (males syvestris)? Fantastic native tree. White flowers with a touch of pink. Valuable to wildlife. Symbol of love and marriage and great for making jelly.
I've had tremendous success with crab apples on an exposed site with heavy clay soil.
Thanks @Cecelia-L I did wonder if another crab apple would be complimentary and like you, we are quite exposed. If I didn't dither so much I could have a fully grown one there by now 🙄
