French Marigold and Starlings

ShepsSheps Posts: 2,236
Good evening everyone...this morning I planted out some French Marigolds as part of my companion planting for the toms, these are surrounding the greenhouse to try and deter pests.

This afternoon a Starling decided to trash the plants!

Any ideas why?

Possibly digging for bugs in the freshly turned soil and your plants were in the way. They don't give a monkey's about all the hard work that's gone into in growing them :)

I've seen plenty of them aerating my lawn this afternoon

Thanks everyone...makes sense re looking for food in the soil but, he's definitely going after the plants, shaking them and pulling off the leaves.

Maybe he's upset that his bug patch has now been taken over by plants.

Netting sounds like a good plan.

Blackbirds destroyed all my newly planted-out cosmos, zucchini and cabbages a few years back.  I assumed they were just hooligans.
