Can anyone help me understand what is wrong with this ornamental cherry?

  • Might anyone know what’s wrong with my cherry tree (ornamental) and what I could do to try and get it looking a bit happier?

It looks to me like the brown bits are where it's either been caught by frost or scorched by strong winds and the green leaves are new growth.

Is either a possibility wherever you are? If so, then the only thing you can do is wait until the brown bits fall off (or you could trim them off if you have the patience, water the plant really well (at least two full watering cans slowly done) and see if there's any improvement. I wouldn't try feeding at the moment. Hopefully the tree will survive.

I'd go with frost damage, too. We have had a mild winter followed by frosts and chilly winds from the NE. I would expect it to recover now.

It certainly looks like frost, or a combination of frost/wind. There seems to be plenty of good new growth, so I wouldn't worry too much.  :)
That's how it is sometimes with gardening.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
