What's eating my crabapple tree?

Hi everyone,

Today I noticed that something is eating our young crabapple tree. The leaves have loads of circular holes in, and I found these black caterpillars on the leaves and flowers. I've looked on google and here on the forum, but can't find any bug that's black and causes this kind of damage in spring.

Does anyone know what these are and whether I need to remove them or whether they can be tolerated?

Thanks :)

Ahh amazing, thank you @pansyface - that first picture in the link you posted looks exactly right.

Am I right in thinking that I should get rid of them, given the tree is so young?

I do like gypsy moths, but alas, I have no big tree. The garden was just a small square of lawn until August last year. That crabapple is probably my biggest one at a glorious size of about 1.5m tall and ~25cm wide
