What's eating my fatsia?

Any idea what's causing growth problems on my fatsia polycarpa 'green fingers'? And how I can treat it? Nothing else in the garden has frost damage (including my other fatsia japonica), I don't think it's that… could be wrong though. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I have a very old established one and the new growth often looks a bit like that. If it doesn't improve when the leaves unfold I cut it back and it branches out from lower down. Mine already has multiple stems though - I might not be so relaxed about chopping a young one if it only has that one stem.

Thanks @JennyJ, it is young with just the one stem so maybe risky :-/

I've also noticed syrupy drops on the brown growth, can't see any bugs though…

Looks like capsid damage. They are related to aphids and cause distortion. They attack buds so, as the buds grow, the damage seems to expand with them. When you notice the damage its too late to do much.
