Rambling hard oval shape

Can anyone advise, noticed small amount of these very hard oval growths on my albertine rambler stems. Don’t know if it’s normal or an issue.

Only a thought but could it be lost thorns or is the shape wrong?
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

The only thing I've seen similar to that is scale insects - but I've not seen them quite like yours.
Can you lift one from a stem with a fingernail?
If you can, and there's some white cotton wool looking stuff underneath, the it's scale insects.
If not, then I've no idea and hope someone else has

That's my first thought too. 'Scars' left by thorns lost when branches rub together in windy winter weather etc.

  • Your all very good. I’ve looked underneath and no discharge etc but I have removed a thorn and it’s a dead ringer on appearance. Thanks for your advise
