Looks like something in the Calathea family, but I couldn't say which one. They're picky about correct watering, don't like direct sun or cold draughts, and need humidity in the air.

    Thanks @JennyJ - I guess it'll last about 2 weeks then

You're right -  I done a google for calatheas and it's a Peacock Calathea - but probably not for long - at least it's in a smart cache pot

If it is still ok in two weeks Gardener's World is a whole programme on house plants.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

Thanks - If it's still alive I'll make sure it sees it :)

Thanks! - looks like they can get to be quite impressive plants.
I'll try my best with it.

I also spotted an 18" ming aralia for £20. If it's still there next week I'll add that to my small collection.
I've had a dinner plate aralia for nearly 4 years and it's really grown well

I've had an Orbifolia for about 6 months, and they form a 'statement' plant.
This site has been very useful for my houseplant journey.

Thanks very much @Balgay.Hill that's a useful site.
It's good to see advice about flushing a plant through a few times a year too - it's very important, but it's advice I rarely see.
It was very dry when I got it yesterday, so I gave it a drink and it's perked-up a lot over night -
