Bark grit mix of compost. What is it?

My herb book is recommending a 'bark grit' mix of compost and I'm guessing that's just buying normal potting compost and then adding bark and grit. Is that right and what ratio should I aim for?
Any help gratefully received.

    If you let us know what herbs you are growing we will be able to advise on the right sort of compost.
