I have one planted against the garage wall.  It took some time to get going, then without pruning, one year it swamped the apricot tree it grew into and flowered gloriously. Then the apricot died and I chopped it down. The wisteria , a floribunda macrobotrys is now grown as a standard next to the garage. A rooted runner I took off it has been planted next to the pergola a bit further up the garden, and as long as we don't let it clamber in to the oak tree is fine there.  I think pergolas are the way to go.
