Not prostate, but we have a dwarf weeping willow overhanging our pond. I can find a picture if you like? It is about a meter high, and has some nice clearance over the edge of the pond. I do see both birds and frogs below it in summer and it has added a lovely bit of height to the pond edge.
Sounds interesting, yes please to a photograph.

Here you go, I’m not sure it’s clearly visible, but there is abut 30cm of pond surface underneath the willow. It’s a bit better in the second photo, the branches basically arch over, there are quite a few pond plants there as well so it looks a bit denser than it is.

  • Would you consider another smallish plant and then just raise the crown to desired height? Would that work?
I would, yes, and this is something i'm looking at as an option, but the problem is choosing the right plant in the first place to try this.  Hoping for something that's evergreen and if at all possible something that flowers followed by fruit or berries

You have a very nice pond, Watsonia, thank you.  This is something i could consider and i'll look into this one.

I don't really see the problem. If you have a mix of planting round the edges, as well as good cover nearby, small birds won't have a problem.
None of the ones here do - all perfectly happy to bathe in the open, shallow parts anywhere in the pond.  Coal tits, blue tits, dunnocks robins etc :)
Evergreen sedges or grasses are good at pond edges.

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Goldfinches and tits bathe in our pond in the open, we also have a local sparrow hawk but lots of cover nearby.

I can’t think of an evergreen that’s going to give the arching shape you’re looking for whilst staying low growing. One if the Cistus might but probably taller than you want?

What about the smaller grasses, many birds love the seed heads ?

Could get something like a korean burnet where the flower heads will arch over the pond? The leaves probably would too once they get big enough, is a perennial though
