Silver birch trees - help

I have 2 silver birch (I think) trees in the garden which have not come back this year. I don't know if they are dead or not but the buds have not opened and they look dead.
Photos are of before and now.
Only change has been that we had the garden fenced in and the trees were left there,  one behind the fence. The big laurel bushes which surrounded those trees before were cut down and removed  because the garden was so dark and closed in. Does anyone have a clue what has happened to my 2 lovely trees? Can I do anything to revive them?

    Those are dead, I'm afraid.

The roots must've been damaged by the new fence and the shrub removal
    In London. Keen but lazy.

They are shallow rooted trees and yours aren't saplings, so I think the work has disturbed/removed the roots. Unfortunately I don't think they will survive if there isn't any signs of life yet.

If I trim off the branches  is there any chance at all?

They should be in leaf by now so look very much dead. try breaking a twig or two, if they are dead they will just snap off, if there is any life they will be more flexible and have some yellowy/green in the wood.

Thanks. Some of the branches have some flex as they don't snap off but some do. On one of the trees  the trunk is green when you scrape a bit off but the other one is brown. Is it worth cutting back the branches to see if there is life there?
