I saw Jacks magic advertised at a garden centre recently as being 50% peat. Would that be old stock?

Possibly. My bag of compost says: “Jack's Magic All Purpose Compost, has just got even better. Enriched with BIO3, our revolutionary new peat alternative, the new and improved formulation not only looks different but performs differently.

    Resulting in bigger, better results.”

I see, think I will pop back to that garden centre.
  • @debs64 Jacks Magic used to be 100% peat, tried last year 100 % peat-free with obviously awful result, and offered a batch with 90% peat-free compost and the remaining 10% are peat. Next year, they shouldn’t have any peat, I would say.

    I my garden.

@Simone_in_Wiltshire that’s what I think, will pop over next week and check again but I may have to stock up if it has peat.

It wasn't 100% peat [Jack's Magic] as that's pretty much impossible, but the newer peat free product seems to be inferior, going by comments on the forum. I never used anything but J's M for years as it was reliably consistent - and excellent, as a seed starter, and for anything in pots.
I got an excellent product locally - feed mill. I might look there again for a bag as I don't have enough home made stuff that's suitable, and I'd need a lot more grit to add to it for some of the annuals.
That's where the problem lies just now - by the time you buy several products to mix together, it's cheaper and easier to buy a product containing peat, and it isn't always viable if you don't have the room, or can't get to an outlet to get all the things you need to add. That's what needs to be addressed. In the past, a bag of Perlite would be enough for adding to pots/trays for some seed sowing. For everything else the basic product was enough.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

The Westland I bought in Morrison last week has BIO3,  whatever that is.

Apparently Westland owns the brands Jack's Magic, Erin, New Horizon and J. Arthur Bowers - https://www.gardenhealth.com/# go to "Our brands".
