Should I prune my cherry blossom

I have a rather wispy cherry blossom at the front of my house. It flowers beautifully but is a bit sparse
What can I do to encourage a bushier tree?

Yes I would prune it, maybe towards the end of May. Sometimes you have to sacrifice one or two seasons flowers to get the structure you want. Don't take more than 1/3 off at any one time or you will just get even more thin whippy growth.

  • Thank you for your help!
  • Mu understanding is that stone fruits like plums and cherries should be pruned in midsummer, which feels alien because the fruits are forming then.  Ashridge Nurseries have useful videos explaining how to prune trees.  Good luck.
