Spindle - buds but no leaves

Hello. We planted a 1.5 meter tall healthy-looking potted Euonymus europaeus 'Red Cascade' (spindle) in the garden last year. It didn't flower in the summer/produce fruits in autumn. I assumed this was probably just part of the transplant shock. It did loose its leaves in autumn as expected (deciduous).

We are now well into meteorological spring and there are many leaf buds on this plant but none have opened. Is this normal? I'm sure many others have these plants - if so, have yours come into leaf already? If it has died I would rather whip it out and get something else planted. Thank you for any advice or opinion.

My Euonymus europeaus, in Sussex, has leaves and flowers but they have been established a few years.  I find it takes a few years before they flower.  Are you in a colder area; if so I wouldn't worry.

I'm guessing it will leaf out in the next couple of weeks but if you are impatient, scratch back a little bark from one of the smaller stems, with your thumbnail. If you see green, it is alive. If dry and brittle, it's a gonner...

FWIW my Korean spindle leafed out within the last week.

  • Thank you.

I've done the scratch test and can see green so am a little more optimistic now that it's just a late starter.
