Lilac pruning & flowering

borgadrborgadr Posts: 718
Good morning!

I have 2 lilacs in my garden. One I pruned last year in late spring straight after flowering (I pruned it moderately, I didn't pollard it), then mulched with well rotted manure the following winter.  The other one I ignored.

The one I ignored is now in flower.  The one I pruned and mulched is not, with no signs of flower buds.

Should I draw the obvious conclusion that the lack of flowers was due to pruning? And is this normal and to be expected?

The one you pruned last year will need a year or so to produce flowering stems so Yes is the short answer. Perfectly normal.
