  • @BlueBirder Do you know by chance what this was: I had two years ago under a leave of a Delphinium plant a caterpillar that was just hairy black (or very dark). Maybe 2 inch long and fluffy hairs?

    I my garden.

No blues of any sort for me yet but so far Comma, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock and Orange Tips.
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
  • @B3 Thanks for your suggestion. That allows me to look into the internet.

    I my garden.

Garden is absolutely dominated by Holly Blues and Orange Tips ATM, but other species also seen occasionally. Brimstones are having a particularly good start to their year here in Notts. There has been an explosion of Holly Blue numbers locally compared to previous years!

The Swallowtail was back again this morning having a drink.  I raced inside to grab my phone, by which time, of course, it had fluttered further down the garden.  I stalked it and it settled but only for a few seconds and then was up and away.  Cracker little beauty!!
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

Holly Blue for me too, only the second one I've seen.

Only Whites joining the Holly Blues and Orange Tips ATM, a near-alarming lack of diversity of species for this time of year compared to previous ones! I've just finished planting up a large butterfly-friendly border with around 40 plants, so it will be interesting to see what it starts drawing in soon when things are flowering. May well end up with moths visiting it first due to the salvias currently being on the cusp of flowering!

EDIT: Forgot to mention Speckled Woods!

Quite a number of holly blues about and large white. Nothing else that I have I seen, but I never do in my area, despite all the planting.
