Fig Tree Pruning

Hello, we've moved to a house with an established fig tree in a large timber framed box (approx 18inches x 18 inches x 4 feet.). There's a lot of new growth, the tree appears to be very healthy but I'm guessing it didn't get a winter prune and now looks as though a lot of fruit will appear at the top of branches already about 8 feet high.

Can we do some cutting back now?

Many thanks if you could offer some guidance - I realise this is a basic question but I'm not a skilled gardener?

    Aside from winter pruning when dormant, I tend to shorten by a third any long or wayward branches and generally tidy up when in full, leafy growth, usually around May/June but subject to your local climate. I don’t know whether this is appropriate or not to the UK, so beat wait for confirmation, but it certainly doesn’t harm mine.

    Many thanks for your advice Nollie.  I will aim to give it a tidy up in the next month or so.
