Climbing rose.

Hello, I'm after some advice about a climbing rose I have in my garden. I am in the process of levelling a slope and my climbing rose is planted at the bottom of the slope. Would it damage the rose if I buried the bottom 6-8 inches of the plant? Would covering it with gravel help? Or do I need to raise it to expose the base of the rose?

Hi and welcome to the forum. An inch or so of compost around the base of the rose annually is fine, but 6-8 inches would be too much at once, I think. Your best bet is to make a bottomless wooden frame around the rose to the finished height you want and then raise the levels around it. Something like 30-40cm long sides should do it. Give the rose a good feed, water it well then mulch a little on top inside the box and it will be happy.
