When I was working in a customers garden I found some unwanted asparagus crowns growing under a hedge. Apparently 30 years previously the last owners had a huge bed and this had been taken up. Obviously a few escaped and I found rows of dead plants with live ones at the end.  My assumption is that as each plant died it had the good sense to reproduce itself.
Anyway as an experiment I  salvaged the live ones and planted them.  Fed them for the first year,  they responded by producing thin fern stems. I left them and fed them and this year they have grown proper sized stems! 😀

But for some reason my picture isn't loading! 🤔
  • The first year I planted my asparagus crowns I didn’t see anything until the summer, I saw small spindly ferny stems. Now years later my established asparagus bed is at this time showing shoots three inches high and I am in a very warm spot. There are early and late varieties and mine are the late purple sprouting ones. Next year they will show approx the same time of year. I feed mine with Epsom salts in the early spring. This is what you can expect if they are alive. Valerie
That is the type of clarification I was seeking.

Good on you at attempting to salvage the long neglected & forgotten asparagus. Great result, well done.

Regarding the photo, what actually happened-what did you see on the screen. Sometimes I find that I have to crop the photo to reduce the  size/megabits

@young codger         I've been unable to add pictures since I started using Firefox instead of Google chrome.  I'll see if I can get the picture added. So far there are 12 stalks of asparagus, they are responding well to watering regularly in the evening. I know its not much but for salvaged plants it's not bad 😀 best of luck with yours. Sideways better than not at all 🤣

The photo is fine, thank you for sharing.

Sometines I find a photo won't upload due to the file being too large, and it is not always possible to see the pop up message telling us. (Maybe a job for tech guys over the weekend)  :)
