Lettuce - direct sow or modular?

  I do my early sowings in module trays indoors to get a good start ...  they need thinning out soon and I'll plant some of the thinnings out under a plastic tunnel cloche, and grow the rest on in little pots in the cold frame to plant out a bit later.  
  
  Then, depending on the evidence of slug activity  I'll either continue as above or try some direct sowing for the rest of the season.

  We start some off in small trays indoors in January than these are transplanted into the polytunnel when they are big enough to handle.

  As the weather gets warmer we then sow directly into the soil in the polytunnel.

  Growing outside is a non starter for us with rabbits and pigeons delighting in the fine leaves.

  We manage to have leaves throughout the year even on Christams day.

  I always start mine in pots, regardless of the time of year. Too many slugs 
  I sow some to keep inside [later Feb, when the heating is on to help germination]  for having at this time of year, as a cut and come again crop.

  It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
