Caterpillar ID - probably a moth?

I have unearthed hundreds of these caterpillars hunkered down in the soil, all over the back garden. I imagine it's a kind of moth. Black butt, no eye markings. Any ideas? thanks

    I think you have a yellow underwing there as well! I got a moth trap last year, so have become a bit of an aficionado!

    They are great fun, absolutely amazing the amount of species I’d never seen that show up. It’s a bit of a Heath Robinson affair but it does the job brilliantly. Opening it up on a morning is usually the highlight of the day

    Even without ID they are hours of fun. I got mine on eBay, it’s a home made affair from a bucket and a lampshade holder but we’ll worth the money

    My boys love it, and their friends come round to open it in a morning in the summer. I’m not allowed to do the opening now though, we quite often get a few hornets and wasps in there, and I dicovered I’m allergic to hornets in rather dramatic near death kind of way last year  :#
