Attaching a hose- stupid question

WAMSWAMS Posts: 1,960
Hello! Haven't had to attach a hose in this country till now (have been using two watering cans but can't spare the time to trot up and down with them anymore) and I'm  unsure what to buy and how to do it, as taps here are quite different.

I have settled on a Gardena hose (thanks to rose thread recommendations) but I don't know which attachment to order.

This is the tap. It has 1/2 written on the side. Does that mean it's half an inch across? Do I order an attachment in that size?

If not, what part of it do you actually measure when ordering an attachment bit?

Thank you.

    Yes,
1/2" is the tap bore size.
Order your fittings to fit that diameter

On second thoughts, perhaps a bit too brief.
1/2" is the usual nominal size for UK domestic water supply.
The brass nipple on the end of the tap will screw off and a plastic boss to attach a 1/2" hose will screw in it's place.
Alternatively the tap that will take a standard 1/2" hose pushed onto the brass nipple and secured with a worm drive clip (bulldog clip).

If you're going to buy a hose to go with it, it'll be wise to make sure you also have a few Jubilee clips to ensure you have a tight fit.  Alternatively, if your hose is a rather tight fit, dip the end in a cup of hot water for a few minutes before pushing it quickly on the tap.

to replace the knurled bit on the old tap.

Then use hozelock connectors to click on and off easily.

Thank you, all. Very helpful. Thank you owd (hello from the rose thread!) and nick for the clip comments, don't think I've seen a clip on a hose before and it wouldn't have occurred to me.

If the pic loaded for you, there is currently no brass bit on the tap  So if I get the 1/2 inch brass connector linked to by fidget, will that go onto my tap as it is? And can I then put a gardena hose into that, or do I need get hozelock stuff?

I'm lazy so I'd like to order it all at once and not have to return anything because I mucked up at the purchasing stage!

If you've got gardena hose, get gardena fittings.

The bit with the ridges on should unscrew.

thank you! I haven't ordered the hose yet.

The ridged bit seems unbudgeable  I might have to involve a Y chromosome in this.

The bit with the ridges on should unscrew.
Just to be clear, this bit- you should be able to turn the fat bit to unscrew it, and you'll then have a screw thread to attach your new fittings

Thank you, raisingirl. I can't move it at all and I would never have known it detached. The previous owner moved here in the 60s and he definitely didn't own a hose for the couple of decades I knew him (he ignored the garden) so it may have been there a fair old while. And become a fossil. Or just beyond my personal (not very considerable) strength to move.

If my husband can't move it, I suppose I'll have to buy a new tap?
