Twisted hazel saplings

I had a beautiful twisted hazel and the squirrels buried the nuts in my plant pots.  Some of the nuts took and I now have five saplings.  The question is prompted by the fact that they all look to be growing fairly straight as in regular hazel trees.  

I'm just curious as to what makes a contorted hazel grow so contorted.  Can you make a hazel contorted? Assuming it's not genetic and carried in the fruits from a contorted tree. 

Can anyone offer some clues on how to breed a contorted hazel please?  Or do I have to go buy one?

    Hello @trudibrown and welcome to the forum :)

    I'm afraid all contorted hazels are grown from cuttings  taken from  twisted one and then grafted onto an ordinary hazel stock. .

    One of my favourite plants in the winter and spring … not as beautiful in the summer … but hey ho, we can’t all be perfect all the time 😉
