Identify these beetles on my yo Acer tree.

  A photo would help us if you could provide one.
  But at a guess they could be scale insects.
  I've had them on one of my acers before.
  I use a scrubbing brush to remove them. They didn't return.

  Many thanks for your help and response with this Pete. Please see attached photos.  (My first draft accidentally posted before I could finalise it. )

  Scale insects do not move. They're a bit like limpets. They stick to wherever they are.
  So if they move around, they're not scale insects.
  If they don't move around, lift one off the plant and see if it has something that looks like cotton wool underneath. If so, then they are scale insects.
