Hi Silver Surfer... thank you. I found a forum in the US which was discussing 'reversion'. Thank you for making me aware of that term. It helped a lot. It said that when it happens the best policy is to 'nip it in the bud' immediately. Which I have now done. It looks a little naked now but hopefully the main plant will have a chance to thrive now!
What a difference. Perfect...how kind to report back and tell us all the outcome. You had nothing to lose. Now your dwarf, slow one one can breath, flower and flourish.
I normally just whizz in to do very quick /minimal typing id stuff and leave lengthy answers, advice help/explanations to others.
Keep an eye on it reverting again...or growing from the roots.
All that reverted growth looked like privet to me. Privet flowers look a bit like skinny white lilac blossom, so I'm wondering if they're related and if that's what was used for the rootstock? Anyone know?
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
I should add, I have a Syringa Palibin so I'll be keeping a close eye on it. Mine's not a standard, and I can't see a graft union, so I'm wondering if they only graft the standards. I think that would make sense because Palibin is supposed to be slow-growing so it would take ages to train into a standard on its own roots.
