If it's 2-3 metres long, I would include something like Sarcococca Hookeriana Var. Humulis. They are not fast growing and keep quite compact. Polemonium Caeruleum which has interesting leaf form when not in flower. Epimediums and Heucheras offer good foliage form too.
@darren hansen 134 I would take a look at Hellebores for early spring interest. All the plants mentioned by @Borderline would work well and are lovely. Asarum europaeum, anemone nemerosa, fritillara meleagris, Galanthus, Pulmonaria Diana Clare, Polystichum setiferum, Geranuim phaum album all grow in my garden same aspect and soil. This border will be at it's best in winter and then into spring. In autumn White Japanese Anemones and Solidago fireworks would work together .
