ACER Tree not budding

  • Hi all

I was told to remove the foliage from the bottom of the trunk to encourage upward growth so I don't have any photos I can share at the moment. There were red leaves growing out of the bottom of the trunk of the Acer though.

I fear this is all our fault, we replanted the Cordyline in there when we moved in.

Indeed plus I suspect the new concrete path and lawn might have caused disturbance to the roots and a shortage of water for the acer.

The foliage at the base is likely to have been from below the graft. If you take a look at it, you should see an obvious change - a lump, or uneven bit of growth, if it's a grafted plant. That's the graft.
I think it's likely to be a combination of things though - too dry, and maybe some disturbance if the cordyline has been planted close by. If the base is still growing, you can let it take over, but it could end up being a huge tree, so you'd need to consider that, and do the appropriate pruning if necessary.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
