Seedlings and Tray Covers

Hi all,

I'm planning on sowing some seeds soon. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on whether or not to use plastic covers for seedlings in trays (for extra warmth/humidity)? I've used them previously but had the problem of fungi before (perhaps there is a way to avoid this?)

Any advice would be great! Thanks

    I keep them on until the seeds germinate, then take them off to reduce the humidity.

    You can get plastic tray covers with a sliding ventillator so that may be your best bet.
    Alternatively, the basic tray covers do help but you have to ensure that you remove them every so often - particularly if you see signs of moisture starting to build up.  Or you could wedge the covers a few mm's to allow some air flow.  It's a fine line between keeping your seedling compost just moist and it becoming too damp and causing damping off.

    Don't use them any more. Most of them eventually cracked, they did encourage more mould (even with the ventilators), and it was a faff to take them off to water everything. If you can afford to be patient, you don't really need them for most plants.
