Any hope for these gaillardias?

I bought 3 gaillardias last year (Arizona Sun, I think). They flowered beautifully last summer but there are only brown stumps with a few green leaves on each plant now (photo below). The geums and sedums next to them already have plenty of new growth.

If anyone has experience in growing gaillardias, I would appreciate your thoughts - should I hang on to these and hope for the best or dig them up and try again with new plants? Or accept that they can only be grown as annuals here? (I'm in the West Midlands, very exposed garden).

    Difficult. They don't survive outdoors for me. Yours is not dead but I'm not sure how it will look if it grows from the ends of the stems. My instinct would be to cut it back quite hard, then wait and see but this may be COMPLETELY WRONG!

    Personally l'd dig them up, but that's just my instinct.

    I planted some I'd started from seed on my allotment two years ago and after the harsh winter of 20/21 they came back even better last year. If there is green growth I'd fancy their chances and the old growth can be cut back.

    Thanks, all. Looks like there may not be much hope but I will probably leave them until the end of the month (next visit to the local nursery).

    They are fairly easy from seed so that's worth considering, they have a few varieties too though it might be getting on a bit if you wanted an early flowering. I have sown some of the 'Arizona apricot ' one's this year so I'll be interested to see how they turn out.
