@Marlorena my non-rose expert gut agrees with you! Here's a photo of the full plant - makes it look bigger than it is.
It's so frustrating - I did a lot of research when choosing, and the fact that it was `easy` and very floriferous, plus, as @GardenerSuze says, the pure white beauty of the blooms convinced me (I should say, mine does produce a lot of flowers). Plus of course, all the examples from people who have had great success with it. I don't think I would replace it with the same thing.
It's disheartening - the very first rose I have tried to grow is a failure
@Pianoplayer ..well it's looking nice for a 'bush' Iceberg... but after 3 years? up to you what you do, but maybe another summer perhaps? it might surprise us.. anyway, it's not your fault, you've done nothing wrong there. If it wasn't growing against an arch it wouldn't look so odd..
..my rose came from Beales when I had it, but Nollie is getting a different experience too.. so there you go but it's an expensive and time wasting trial and error with some roses unfortunately..
@Pianoplayer I am so sorry you fell disheartened by this your first rose. I only have a small garden and every single plant has to earn it's keep. Maybe Austin's would replace it with something else of your liking if they read this thread ? Remember rose sickness if you replace it, something others will be able to give you more information on if you need it. The Iceberg rose I looked after wasn't a climber it was still spindly in growth, flowered until late November when I always picked the last few blooms for the elderly lady I worked for at the time.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
I wouldn't say mine was weak. It got cut down to a stump when the fence was replaced and it was back up the fence the next year. Full size again within two years PS mine would've been a cheapo too. Probably a bare root. from Woolworths🤔
Mine was a cheap one as well. I didn't even know about specialist growers back then. Probably from a supermarket or DIY shed, or maybe Woolworths or Wilko. Outside chance local garden centre half-price-half-dead shelf (not much cash around then either).
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
@Marlorena@B3@JennyJ@Nollie@GardenerSuze Thanks all for your input. It is really interesting. Nollie, I think your original hypothesis that current versions are problematic seems to be right. GardenerSuze - I also have a small garden with no room for passengers - that's what makes this so frustrating, as it was supposed to be a focal point - ha! ha! Anyway, I will see what happens over the next few months.
Is there a rise called the patient gardener? There should be. Sometimes, you just need to wait and sometimes it's a waste of time. The thing is you never really know 😊
@B3 I think that is what I love about gardening the things you look forward to sometimes go wrong, then something great happens that you don't expect. All part of the fun.
