@fizzyliz I don't like the smell of the flowers!
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

@nutcutlet ah ok, the berberis we have in our hedge looks completely different to this! It has orange berries and green almost cutout leaves rather than smooth oval with yellow flowers!
Is it a particular type then?
@GardenerSuze I think initially on walking past it smelt nice but then I had a sniff after your comment and er yeah it’s not actually that pleasant!

@fizzyliz A friend of mine held a national collection of Berberis. It filled a field! You can get them in different colours and sizes.

Loads of varieties of them. Orange or yellow flowers, deciduous, evergreen, red foliage, green foliage. All good plants for awkward areas.

I like the smell, although I don't have a great sense of smell, so perhaps that has something to do with it  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Agree with GardenerSuze  and Fairygirl re number, colour etc of Berberis sp

I believe your one may be Berberis julianae.
Pendulous  clusters of tiny golden flowers, huge thorns in groups of 3, leaves with lethal prickles.
    Compare...see...
