Fungus growing in bagged compost

just opened bag of Levingtons compost that I bought February and there’s a couple of those long stringy fungus mushrooms growing ..
can I just pull em out and use the compost for salad seeds or is it advisable just to use it to top up outside pots rather  than edibles that I want to grow
thanks

Hi @80smaniac01 and welcome to the forum  :)

It'll be fine ... it's just fungus doing what it does, break down the organic matter in the compost into a form that's accessible to the roots of your plants.  It's happening throughout our gardens (if we've got lots of good organic stuff in the soil such as garden compost and manure etc) but we rarely notice it ... it's more obvious in bags.

Just remove the larger bits of fungus if there are any (pop them on your compost heap) and use the compost for your seeds and plants as usual ... not a problem at all.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

It’s fine to use .Sometimes they pop up in the plant pots too .Just pull them up and put them on the composter or in the green bin
