Protection from slugs

I put a bunch of 9cm pot plants into the ground this spring, and noticed a few are getting chomped on.  My initial reaction was to tolerate the damage in the hopes of building an ecosystem, but I'm now curious about the techniques everyone uses to protect their young plants from slugs. I've put a jam jar over one of the plants - could that work as a sort of cloche?

Also, I notice not all plants get munched e.g. Phlox paniculata on one side of the garden have been bitten down to the stems, and they are mostly fine on the other sunnier side.  One young astrantia is fine, whereas two others next to it have so far been mostly untouched.

I don't plant them out at this time of year, for the reasons given in that thread.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I think a jam jar will just provide a cosy, warm cover for the slugs- that can get under anything.
Carmarthenshire (mild, wet, windy). Loam over shale, very slightly sloping, so free draining. Mildly acidic or neutral.

Thanks @Fairygirl.  It was that thread that got me thinking about slugs specifically! It's the first time I'm growing anything in the ground and I was keen to get them in asap thinking they would grow faster.  My next step will be to try a miscanthus mulch.

@Emerion - oop.  Will be removing said jam jar.
