Recycling moss

I have moss growing on my roof and in some of my plant pots. Can it be reused in the garden? If so, how? I was thinking could I use it under a rose bush to retain water.  Thanks.

Good for to make a  green roof; to put ou for nesting birds; at the base of hanging baskets to retain water.

Good question. I have lots of moss too. Is it strange to make a top dressing of it to stop soil from drying out? Can you compost it?

I've been working with it today Ilikeplants. We scrape it off the top of plant pots, paths, borders etc in the garden where I help out. It all goes on the compost heap.

That’s good @Uff I was wary about composting it but it’s in the grass too so probably end up there anyway

Mine gets chucked in at the back of borders where it can't do any harm - shrubs etc. We have loads of it all over the place, it just goes with the territory. The stuff in the grass gets scraped out and composted, if I can be bothered scraping it out.
It isn't of much use otherwise, apart from nesting birds if you can keep it dry and put it somewhere they can easily access it.
When it's in pots, it's often a sign of them being a bit damp or waterlogged, so just be careful if the plants you have in them need good drainage etc.
Much better things to use if you want to retain moisture around your roses, because it won't add any extra nutrition.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • During the very first lock down when we couldn't travel and everything was shut etc, I had to improvise that spring. I needed something to 'earth' up my spuds. I had just raked the lawn and had a mountain of moss collected so I used it to cover the spuds and it seemed to do the trick, much to my amazement. (Note the moss had not been treated with any chemicals as I couldn't get any moss killer).
  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
