Sunburst Cherry Tree

I bought a bare root Sunburst Cherry Tree two years ago, rootstock Colt .The first year nothing, no leaves no buds.
Today 11th April 22 I have checked the tree and nothing ,no leaves or buds.
I live in the north west, the soil is clay. I have Apple Trees and Plum Trees near by and they are OK.
My question....... Should I be seeing some activity on the tree by now?

If you had no leaves or buds in 2021 then you can be pretty sure that your tree is dead.

You should have seen something by now.
But there's a slim chance you tree is just growing roots prior to producing growth above soil.
    Try the fingernail test-
Starting on the upper part of the tree, just scrape the bark slightly with a fingernail and see if you can see any green under the top layer - if there's green that's good and your tree is still alive.
If there's no green work you way toward the lower part of the tree and see if you get any green.
If not, then as SS says above it's a goner I'm afraid

We also planted the same tree/root stock two years ago @ieccles651_nmUKAC- It is healthy, and has more buds this year, but hasn't grown much at all.

We know lots of people who have planted Cherry trees, and virtually every one of them say they have never had a Cherry (thanks to the birds and squirrels), even those with huge trees. If I could wind the clock back, I would have planted something else (Apple, Plum) which is more likely to give you a crop.

If you do decide to plant another Cherry, you will need to net it if you want to get any fruit for yourselves.

  • Thanks, I have already ordered a replacement.
This time I have gone for a Cherry Plum bare root tree, less exotic.
I must admit it's a mystery why the Cherry tree curled up it's roots because I have 4 apple and 2 plum trees in the garden .
