    You need thick clothing, strong gloves and eye protection! However,  don't worry about the shape. They recover so fast you will hardly notice. I think you are right to tackle one at a time but although it's hard work, it's not as bad as it sounds: all that protective gear is just to stop them fighting back!

    I lie them on their side to split them. I never wear any protective stuff. Maybe gloves if I'm cold.  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    To be fair, our phormium is about 8ft high and wider across. It isn't in a pot......

    I speak from experience I'm sorry to say. Not such a problem when it is on the ground to split.
    I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
