Is Spagnum Peat Moss less environmentally damaging than peat moss?

I'm finding it very difficult to find planting compost in Portland, Oregon that does not include either Spagnum Peat Moss or Peat Moss. I don't want bog-destruction on my conscience. Can I use Spagnum Peat Moss guilt-free? I've read that it is "new" moss that does not require digging in bogs, but not sure whether I trust the info.
