Moving Hellebores

I need to move three large Hellebore plants later this year but so far I have only read negative reports regarding transplanting. Does anyone have a fool proof method.

I've moved them no problem. You just have to get a decent rootball, and then do the usual things of replanting at the same depth,, watering until established etc  :)

You can also divide them. I've done that too, albeit accidentally  ;)

  • Maybe we Scots just have the knack!!
Thanks for the info. The plants flower beautifully and I would hate to lose them. Should I leave it well into autumn before I make the move do you think?

I think I've just moved them when I feel like it!
I certainly moved one in late spring/early summer, and it's been moved twice without it being bothered. I'd tend to move them before autumn so that they get a chance to settle before winter, but I'm not sure it would matter. I dug one out recently, while flowering,  and stuck it in a pot and it's fine    :)

I've moved them at different times (not when they are actually in flower). They do sulk a bit, so you may not get as good a display next year, but they've all come back once they've settled in, so if you follow FG's advice, you probably won't lose them, you may just set them back a bit

  • Many thanks. I need to do it later in the year so I reckon I will try to do it early September.
