Poorly Hakonechloa

KeenOnGreenKeenOnGreen Posts: 1,831
Our decades old Hakonechloa was showing strong growth recently, but is now looking very poorly.  Are they affected by Vine Weevil? We’ve never had any problems with the plant before.

I’m wondering if it’s our dog, although she normally prefers to chew the Calamagrostis.

Never had problems with vine weevil on them @KeenOnGreen. It might benefit from splitting though, and it's a good time to do it. It looks as if it's struggling in the middle, with decent sections around the edges.

We split it last year @Fairygirl for the first time in years, so I don't think it's that. It's very odd, especially as it started growing really strongly. I'll dig up the soil around it today, to see if the roots are health. It just might be the dog, or local cats, as I know they like to chew on our grasses. It's taken us so long for this clump to reach its current size, we'd be gutted to lose it.

Perhaps it is an outside influence then. It's a shame - they're usually so easy too.
Is there any way you can protect it a bit? Not ideal, but maybe enough to get it recovering. A bit of chicken wire/mesh or similar, as a temporary measure.

Just a thought ... when you split it did you discard the older roots and just replant the younger ones ... that's what I do ... no point in replanting old roots ... like us they don't really rejuvenate  :'(

I did think of chicken wire @Fairygirl so we'll give that a go. I just replanted the two halves @Dovefromabove as there didn't appear to be any old bare patch in the middle.

I'll see what happens over the next few weeks, and give it a bit of a pampering.
