Self seeded

We go to all the trouble of getting a good spot for plants and then looking after them but these beautiful little plants have self seeded on terrible soil 30cm wide between decking and the wall.

@mac12 How lovely  Primula denticulata they will seed where they are happy. I discovered a primula next to a wall in my garden last week. It was in a cool moist spot, no flowers as it is tiny but I haven't grown them for six years or more waiting to see what it is next year.  Nature is amazing.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

Hoping mine will self seed in time.  :)

I cut the seed heads off.  They look very untidy.
They will grow little plants out from the main plant that you can pull off and re plant.

Some plants will self seed and happily grow in what seems the most inhospitable place. I have verbena bonariensis that have self seeded from the garden into a gravel strip alongside the house wall. The soil underneath is dry and never been dug in 20 years but the verbenas really flourish there, more so than the ones I planted into a well tended bed and each year they just carry on self seeding.

Poor soil suits them @joanna65, so they will seed happily into gravel, if the climate suits well enough.  :)
Those primulas self seed very easily too.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

These are the joys that overly tidy gardeners deny themselves! I spend ages trying to teach my customers not to over weed....I swear some would get the hoover out in their garden if they could!!
Plants will always find their own happy place!
  • My mum sometimes hoovers her decking 😂
