I have my G. nodosum in the nastiest darkest driest bits I can find
However, it seeds like anything and I’m forever digging out the seedlings and giving them away
My best nodosum form is ‘Hexham Big Eyes’, which has really big, pale lavender flowers—it makes much more of an effect than any of the others, so I’m trying to encourage it and discourage the rest. It actually looks as if it might be a cross with G. sanguineum or something.
@Cambridgerose12 I grow G Mary Mottram, it is very slow growing. It was given to me by a friend who actually found it growing in her garden and named it after Mary Mottram who ran a nursery in Devon. I think there is also a pulmonaria or the same name. I have been very interested in this thread, hardy geraniums are easy to grow and great for anyone out there who is just starting out in gardening.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
I have a patch of the bog standard phaeum at the back of the veg plot in front of a north facing fence and it behaves itself really well there. I mostly don't notice it until it froths up with the flowers. I cut it back after flowering and the focus is then on the veg plot so it does a good job.
@Woodgreen I agree, useful information for anyone looking for new geraniums, I myself am in search of a few plants to mainly suppress weeds ( and also look pretty) in an area that gets some sun but not a lot. Thank you all for your help
Just thought I'd update this thread with a photo of the first flowers on two of my phaeums: 'Lily Lovell' in blackcurrant squash purple and 'Wendy's Blush', which starts out a very pale bluish lilac with violet brush marks around the centre, before turning rosy pink. Both have larger flowers than 'Samobor'. Sorry, Lily has come out upside down!
Hi @GardenerSuze, looking at my emails it appears I got 'Wendy's Blush' at Barnes Nurseries and 'Lily Lovell' from Larch Cottage Nurseries--both online.
@Cambridgerose12 I had been looking on line following your recommendations earlier in the thread but no luck sold out! So thankyou will take another look.

@GardenerSuze, I bought 'Wendy's Blush' yesterday from Seagate Nursery at a plant fair https://www.irises.co.uk/ Under new ownership they have extended their range of plants from just Irises

It's true though, in drier ground under big trees it is a different plant altogether.
