Rhododendron - suitable for growing in front of Thuja??

AcuwellAcuwell Posts: 87
We have a row of Thuja at the bottom of our garden and would like to plant some sort of a Rhododendron in front of it.  Our soil is slightly on the acidic side and I would assume the Thuja needles will help.  It would be facing South/West with no morning sun.  Is this a good idea and if so can anyone recommend a particular Rhododendron?   Many thanks.

I guess it would depend on how near you want to plant it Acuwell. All conifers drink a lot and rhododendrons don't like dry conditions.

Agree with Uff,they are Japanese woodland plants. They like acidic soil, damp shade or a huge amount of rainwater.

If there's room , and you get enough rain, it wouldn't be a problem. They can cope with some sun as long as they're happy at their feet, and as long as it isn't endless, full on heat.
There are hundred of varieties though, so it's hard to suggest any. The evergreen Japanese azaleas are also lovely, and more compact.
Start with the colour you  like, and then take a look at some of the specialist growers. Glendoick,  and Millais, are a good place to start.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
