Dahlia Frost Damage

Hello all,

I seemed to have had a little bit of frost damage on my recently sprouted dahlias. They're all in a cold greenhouse. It must have been light as some dahlias were fine and nothing else was damaged. I cut back the damage as far as I could. Was this the right thing to do? I've attached a photo, you can see how the sprout next to it escaped nicely. The remnants of the frost bitten one are just next to it.

The problem is that greenhouses can be lovely and hot during the day, but very cold at night, and are often no warmer than the outside temps.
The bit you've cut back might come away if it's still viable, but if you still get frosts in the forecast, it might be worth adding some fleece around it before the temp drops too far in the afternoon/evening.   :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you! Fleece a good idea. Keeping my beady eye on the weather forecast too.

It's often just that one might be in a draught or less protected @alex.jones401 and it's enough to affect them. Tricky. Mine are in the house at this time of year when I grow them.  :)

  • Caught me off guard really. I've had all sorts growing in there all winter.
