If the clems are slow, it mainly comes down to the site conditions and the drainage. They do take around four or five years to be at their best, but if you're buying from a reputable supplier, they're usually at least a couple of years old, and most will carry on thriving well if they have the right conditions. I usually sow the Ipomoeas around April and they're inside until it's properly warm enough for them to go outside. I only grow the very dark ones like Black Knight.
