  • Tkmaxx had a few RHS books at very reasonable prices recently. Might be worth having a look there.
  • Flick through a few magazines next time your in the SM.
Try eBay or the local charity shop for cheap gardening books.

If you have a library near you that opens at a time when you can get to it, that might be worth a browse too.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

They're often cheap as chips from ebay.

For me, the illustrations in The New Encyclopaedia of Gardening Techniques have been stupendously helpful.

Thanks for the suggestions - our local charity shops don't seem to do too much in that regard, but I'll keep an eye out. The library is a good shout for having a look, but once I do I want a tombe I can have at home and reference :) Some great ideas, cheers folks

I don't know if it's a universal practice but, when we lived in West Sussex, our local library always had a 'For Sale' rack at ridiculously cheap prices.  The books on it were either those that had been updated, or some that had become a bit scruffy and needed replacing.  Not for gardening, but I recall getting a huge atlas of greater London for £1 when the price new was £27.  I was a regular caller.

GW magazine too might help - it's good at covering basics like pruning, planting seeds, making a new bed. You can get them on Ebay. It doesn't much matter which year you look at, the basics are the same.

Cheers Fire. It's reminded me I have access to digital copies of GW magazine via my Libby Library app :) - I've downloaded the most recent and will give it a scan.

I'll check out the Titch' too - I remember watching him on TV eons ago.
